MEET MARA NEWMAN
Write-in Candidate for Mayor of Burnettown
At 19 years old, Mara Newman represents the fresh, principled leadership Burnettown needs to tackle the critical challenges facing our community. While some may see her youth as inexperience, Mara brings the energy, education, and unwavering commitment necessary to stand up to powerful interests and fight for residents' rights.
Currently pursuing her Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering at USC Aiken, Mara possesses the analytical and problem-solving skills essential for addressing complex municipal issues like environmental contamination, funding crises, and regional collaboration. Her engineering background gives her a systematic approach to evaluating problems and developing practical solutions.
For over a year, Mara has served as a Daycare Teacher at Midland Valley Christian Academy, working directly with local families and children. This experience has given her firsthand insight into what families need to thrive and has reinforced her determination to protect the next generation from environmental hazards like the proposed 293-acre Rabbit Hill landfill expansion.
Anyone who knows Mara can attest to her lifelong passion for politics and civic engagement. From childhood, she has been driven by a desire to create positive change, and those in her circle know that fighting for justice and community improvement have always been central to who she is.
What sets Mara apart is her willingness to take bold stands on difficult issues. She's not afraid to oppose powerful interests like Hilltop C&D, LLC, or to demand better funding for our police department after years of neglect. She supports the legal challenge by Friends of Horse Creek Valley and the South Carolina Environmental Law Project, understanding that Burnettown cannot continue to be treated as a dumping ground.
Mara's campaign addresses the real issues facing Burnettown: stopping environmental injustice in Horse Creek Valley, solving our police funding crisis, addressing homelessness through regional partnerships, and truly restoring the Sassafras Festival to the community celebration residents remember and deserve.
As someone who will live with the consequences of today's decisions for decades to come, Mara Newman has the motivation and determination to fight for Burnettown's future – not just manage its decline. She represents a new generation of leadership that won't compromise on community health, safety, or prosperity.
Burnettown needs a mayor who will stand up, speak out, and fight back. Mara Newman is that leader.
At the core of my values is the belief in the power of collaboration and the importance of amplifying diverse voices. Together, we can foster a more equitable and thriving society. Join me in this journey towards a better future for our families and the generations to come.
